What's with the 'ADD' nonsense?

Can anyone explain to me the mentality behind many on Buzznet who feel compelled to do wholesale 'adds' of as many people as possible to their friends list?

Perhaps I've missed something...   maybe there was a missive from management at Buzznet? Perhaps, "the one who dies with the most people on their 'friends list' wins?"

I don't get it, I seem to be barraged with 'adds' from bands and dubious 'singers' whom I've never heard of; and, upon hearing them, know I do not want to be associated with them. In any way…   shape…   or fashion.

There are also those obsessed with their own shameless self-promotion on Buzznet, apparently, also missing the ability to divine that I simply do not care for what they’re shovelling –the worst offenders seemed to be the celebrity-obsessed; a terrible condition best corrected with a lobotomy.

I’m not the smartest guy in the world, but it doesn't seem to take a great deal of intellect to be able to check out someone's page, assess the type of music they like or whatever else they may be interested in and make a determination as to whether or not they might be interested in doing free advertising for you. Let’s be honest now, that’s what it’s all about. I’M NOT INTERESTED!

I can see why some friends are no longer here.

I have some words of advice that may help to correct this behavior, In the future, check out the page before you add.

Thank you.

Excellent points, and they get into questions that I've been meaning to ask for quite some time as well. It's one thing to have been here on Buzznet for a year or more and have a number of people that you've reciprocated with and added them, but my eyebrow is raised when I see someone who had been here for less than two weeks and shows 900+ "friends" already, and I'm not exagerrating.

Then what does it say when this same individual had less than sixty people linking back. Does that tell you anything?

Buzznet is called a social networking site. I thought that when you added someone here it was because you were interested in sharing your photos, writing or videos with another. I've begun to think that the new rules of such sites are to see how many "friends" you can add in any given day.

And I'm not going to get started on the so called bands or musicians, as we're in complete agreement. Let Cletus Crotchrot or Waldo and the Wankers go peddle their so-called music elsewhere, thank you.

The "shameless self-promotion" you see here is a reflection of our celebrity-obsessed as a whole. How many times a month do we hear of yet another female celeb showing her vee-jay-jay, to use Oprah's term, to anyone with a camera in their hand. In the beginning I laughed, but now it's becoming like a monotonous routine.

Thanks for bring this up, as I now see that I'm not alone.

Update: Found probably the most blatant example to date regarding your topic above. The person (actually a band) shall remain nameless, but they were trying to add me. As of about midnight EDT last night pulled the following very revealing metrics from their pages...
